Today I received an HTML file in Unicode (two bytes per character), and it looks fairly nasty in VEDIT because there's a NUL between most characters.

Fortunately I can edit the file in Notepad, with which it was created.

As Unicode gradually becomes more popular, you may begin to find it embarrassing to be compared unfavourably with Notepad, albeit only in this one respect. [grin]

While VEDIT cannot directly edit a Unicode file, you can translate some Unicode files to/from plain ASCII with the recently added {EDIT, Translate, Unicode to ASCII} function.

Since VEDIT is written in Assembly language, adding support for 2-byte
Unicode characters will be a huge undertaking. We plan on starting this work next year.

Ted.

Great, I wish you all the best for that and I look forward to the result!
(Actually I need to edit Unicode-files and it is painful not being able to
use VEDIT...)

Thumbs up and applause :-)

You have my sympathy, for what it's worth. I can imagine it takes much more work to add Unicode support to VEDIT than to add it to Notepad...

I think it will turn out to be necessary work in the long run, but it must be very irksome that you have to do all that work and then customers will just take it for granted, as though it was a mere tweak.

I would like to echo Jonathan Palfrey's 6/14/2002 reply. I have little doubt that adding Unicode support is a daunting task, however, it does seem necessary for the continued relevance of the product. It certainly is high on my list, anyway. Since Ted Green's 3/14/2003 reply, any update on when you might take this on? Thanks.

Sorry, but we will not even begin working on Unicode this year; the earliest I forsee having Unicode support is late 2004.

Ted.

Your recent newsletter about Pro64 did not mention Unicode - will that
also be addressed with Pro64 or di you have different plans for unicode?

Cheers

Michael

No, VEDIT Pro64 does not support Unicode. I cannot promise when we will start working on Unicode support.
