Congratulations on the significant update 6.20!

Naturally, no good deed goes unpunished, so I have a simple question about installing the new version. I have noticed that the directory structure has been changed. So, my question is - should I uninstall the earlier version before I install this update?

I suppose it's possible that the new install takes care of stuff and moves things around and I should just do it, but I figured I'd ask before I did anything.

Thanks!

So long as you have a good backup of your current vedit installation, Just install as an upgrade. Worst case is you have to do a complete uninstall and then do a clean install and copy back your vdms, etc from the backup.

Let us know how it goes? What OS are you using?

Scott

OK, I'll try it. I am using Win7, 64-bit, service pack 1. I am using the 32-bit version of Vedit.

I'll let you know how I make out...

I tried installing 6.20.1 without uninstalling my 6.15.4. On the install I used the Detailed version, which I have seldom used, just because it seemed safer.

The install did recognize that I had the earlier version and offered to back it up to veditold. I think I said OK, but after the install, I do not find that directory on my system. However, the earlier version remains in c:\vedit and has a separate entry on the Start>Programs list, so that is good.

(for the new version, I took the default C:\Program Files... installation dir.)

One problem I did have - it offered to move my config and keyboard option files, and presented me with the directory to copy them from, but this was wrong, and probably not just for my system. The directory it gave me was the ROOT. For example, it said it would copy my config file from:

c:\vedit.cfg

instead of c:\vedit\vedit.cfg

I typed in the extra vedit subdir and it worked and transferred OK.

When I start the new vedit my config settings and keyboard are now correct (i.e. the files were transferred OK once I fixed the directory in those dialogs).

New Help works fine!

My initial startup stuff, where I set a different default directory for opens, load a user tools file, etc, do not work, but I can fiddle with that and get it working, I think.

Very nice!! :)

Rich

Are there any other path names containg blanks in the new dir structure?
With respect to some old programs i have to avoid blanks in path names.

Thanks,

Fritz

Inside the Vedit directory under \Program Files..., there are no subdirs with spaces in the name.

Continuing my report of my install results, it is kind of difficult to set up a ustartup.vdm because Win7 is so bitchy about allowing you to modify the Program Files directory. I use Total Commander for file copying, and it gives you "As Administrator" ability, so I can get the job done, but I'm not so sure about Windows Explorer.

Also, I could not edit ustartup.vdm inside the Program Files dir, because it could not be saved after the changes, so I had to copy it outside, edit it, then copy it back in. Not a big deal, but kind of a chore.

Could you drop to the Vedit command line in the new version and type user_home ? Your ustarup.vdm file, as I understand it should be in User_home\config

You should not run into any complains from Windows then when you modify it.

Ah, I see. Yes, it is there. Guess I need to familiarize myself with the new directory structure! Thanks, Scott.

Edit:
Actually, the ustartup.vdm is in the user-mac directory:

c:\ProgramData\vedit\user-mac\ustartup.vdm

Hi Rich,

I share your feelings of

>Guess I need to familiarize
>myself with the new directory

I have also checked intallw.vdm about the location of ustartup.vdm. This is that I came up with,

//
// Copy a few files to proper destination
// Ensure ustartup.vdm and user.mnu in USER_HOME\user-mac,
// but don't overwrite existing ones
//

I take that your directory is a special case of this one.
At the same time, I would appreciate your verifying it.

Now, I would like to give a self-survey. I like very much that ustartup.dm is now in the USER_MACRO directory. In Version 6.15 I did put it into my USER_MACRO directory.
However, I also had to copy it to my HOME directory, since Vedit was looking for it there. This copying, was a choir.

An extra dividend of the new directory structure is that my
Home directory is smaller. Also, I like to study a program, by studying its directory structure. But this is just a personal preference.
