I'm having a weird problem. Unless I invoke VPW from it's home directory, the config file seems to be ignored. It always invokes "Tabs:8" with "Expand Tabs" unchecked.

I have .txt files defaulting to VPW.exe
The home direcory is first in the PATH
The VEDIT.CFG is in the directory with VPW.EXE
No invocation parameters are being used except the file name to be edited

What settings am I missing? It works on my other system fine...

Running VPW 6.12.1, Win98

Thanks,
Walt

Check the VEDIT.INI file to make sure the HOME and other directories are correct. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong here.

You could follow the step-by-step instruction in the the on-line help topic "Configuration (Troubleshooting)".

Otherwise, uninstall VEDIT, and *** DELETE *** the entire VEDIT directory. Then re-install.

It always invokes "Tabs:8" with "Expand Tabs" unchecked.

This can also happen if you have set up a configuration file. If your txt.cft contains a line like
Config_Tab(8;LOCAL)
Vedit will set tab stops at 8 when opening a *.txt file.

Make sure that there is no (perhaps old) VEDIT.CFG in the directory of
your text file.

VEDIT first searches in the current directory for the config file.

Finally found the solution. I completely forgot about the file-cfg directory. There was as CFT file stepping on my settings.

Power and versatility got in the way...

Yes, it has all gotten pretty complex.

Maybe there should be an indicator somewhere to tell if the configuration was changed due to the file type specific configuration. In the Status display, perhaps. And maybe a small symbol in status line, too.

That is a good idea as this has confused many other users. In fact I am no longer willing to help users solve configuration problems; I tell them to follow the troubleshooting steps in the on-line help topic "Configuration - Troubleshooting".

In the 80's, I had an internal value that told me whether the configuration had been changed by the-then vedit.ini file (now called startup.vdm).

I really like this idea!
