I am running VEdit v6.15.1 (32 bit) on a Win XP box.

Whenever I close VEdit, I get a dialog from Windows with the title: "VEDIT Editor" and the message "VEDIT Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It then goes on to ask me if I want to send a report to Microsoft. Note that the text of the error report it builds to send to Microsoft appears below.

Note that I have noticed one situation when VEdit doesn't crash on exit. That is if I do not load a pre-existing file (so I create a New document, edit it, and save it).

Any ideas on what is wrong with VEdit?

Thanks.

-Bill

Bill:

I never had such a crash but let me do a wild guess (due to the
mentioned vshellx.dll):

Do you have Nokias Connection Suite running in the background?

On my box that software interfered with TotalCommanders context menue
handler and let that one crash.

An update of the Nokia Suite cured that problem here.

Thanks, Christian, for your response.

No, I don't have Nokia's Connection Suite on my machine. I suspect that you are on the right track, however. My guess is that VEdit is conflicting with something else, possibly a patch pushed out by my IT department.

You may try this (That way I solved my problem. Thanks to
TotalCommander's forum.)

1. Get the free tool ShellExView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
2. Disable all context menu shell extensions one by one (you can
hide/keep those belonging to Windows, they are usually OK).
3. Continue until crashing stops

I tried to send the message below, but it was bounced by some email server (not sure whose).

Hi Ted-

Thanks for your response. I just cold-booted my computer and the problem persists. I have attached the files you requested.

I just made this problem occur by launching Vedit, opening vedit.ini, and then exiting Vedit. At the bottom of my email is the file that MS builds for debugging info. There is also a larger DMP file that is locked and deleted before I can get to it. I believe it is the data that is in the dialog box but is not selectable. If you know of any information that can help you, let me know and I can forward it on.

One possible clue. I see there is a file named vedit-cleanup.bat and a directory named VeditTmp placed in the Temp directory. I can tell that the batch file is not called before the crash. Not sure if this will help.

Note that I don't have easy access to another computer to try this on. One distinct possibility is that there is some Windows patch that may not be playing well with Vedit. Note that our IT department manages our computers, so I don't know exactly what patches have been installed. If you know of any problems with specific patches, let me know and I can find out if they have been rolled out.
