Frankly, I don't yet remember all the bug fixes during this past year.

The doco on the new features is very sparse - only in the whatsnew.txt file; none yet in the on-line help.

This file has some doco on the new ftp support:

www..../download/beta/ftp-doco.txt

I will continue working on the doco when I get back from Christmas vacation.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas everyone!

Ted.

Sorry for the missing doco. I wanted to

Hello,

I would like to join Fritz, somewhat belatedly, in appreciating these two new features in Vedit 6.15. More specifically, in Version 6.15.1.

Unlike Fritz, I would say: Wonderful, especially the first one.

So, I have tried to install Vedit 6.15.1 on one of my USB drives. I believe that I have succeeded, but I am not quite sure. In any case, I would like to give a self survey:

At the installation prompt, I have replaced c:\vedit by i:\vedit and at the same time I have checked the USB drive box. Here, of course i: is the drive letter of my USB drive. The installation program said that I was successful. Then I removed this USB drive and replaced it with another one, which does not have vedit on it. To my surprise the drive letter of my new USB drive was j: and the drive letter i: was skipped. This certainly looks pretty cool !
cool !

Looking forward to hearing from other Vedit Users about their experiences of installing Vedit 6.15.1 on a USB drive.

I am looking into the price for special USB drives that will auto-run when plugged into a computer.
Normal USB drives cannot auto-run on a "stock" Windows computer. (Absolutely sure of this - researched it for hours and Microsoft states this as a fact. You can install USB autorun software, but then the computer is not "stock".)

However, some special USB drives identify themselves as two drives - a CDROM which can auto-run, and a normal USB drive. See:

http://www.hscus.com/whatsNew/UD-RW.htm

If they are reasonably priced and work with VEDIT, I hope to make them available with VEDIT pre-installed.

Ted.

Do you refer to U3 technology here?

No, I don't think a U3 USB drive will auto-run either, without first installing special software.

As far as I understand it there is no need to install software first.
It should be already within Windows 2000 and newer.

I'll try to buy an U3 enabled stick these days and test it then

It does sound like a U3-USB will auto-run as it also has a small partition that emulates a CDROM. I will go buy one too.

Before I had the chance to buy such a stick (not wide spread here yet)
I read some articles in their knowledgebase at http://u3.custhelp.com/

It seems to be not "just calling a setup.exe" to make an application
U3-ready. (But I haven't downloaded the SDK yet.)

We'll see...

Since it REALLY IS a nice idea to always have a running VEDIT in the
pocket it seems to be worth to have a closer look at this or a similar
technique.

I have a U3 Kensington on order; not readily available here yet either.

That file doesn't exist (No problem since the others are existing.)

Here are my first impressions:

Very good feature! Will be tested next.

> Technical - DI1() allows 15 checkboxes, radio buttons, push buttons

Not only Fritz is happy about that.

> Technical - New Config(F_TEMP_DIR,"Temp file directory")

Very good!

Can't be tested yet: The macro SENDEMAIL.VDM is missing.

That one inspired me for most testing. So the report became a bit
longer and I'll post it in a separate message.

Here my first report about the
> New FTP edit, download, upload functions (beta)

Most items are described only in short words for now.

1) If VEDIT_HOME is not on C:

a) FTP open fails with "DIRECTORY NOT FOUND c:\vedit\ftp"
b) and then switches to command mode!

==> Workaround for a)
set Config_String(VEDIT_FTP, "D:\vedit\ftp") in USTARTUP.VDM
==> b) shouldn't happen

2) If no password given in site:

a) MS error code 4: "Can't open file"
b) and then switches to command mode!

==> a) It should be possible to omit password and to be prompted
(if user don't want the password to be saved on disc)
==> b) shouldn't happen

3) If wrong password given in site:

a) MS error code 12014: "wrong password"
b) and then switches to command mode!

==> b) shouldn't happen

4) Password is too visible (in clear text) in dialogs!

a) when typed in
b) when later shown as URL

==> a) Should be shown as asterisks
==> b) Should be shown scrambled, e.g. like in VEDIT.INI

5) If file is openend via FTP for the first time:

Most times: Internal Update() is missing

==> key press required (like after Get_Key())

6) If the via FTP openend file is already open in VEDIT
(e.g. on a second try with FTP)

a) Error: FILE IS BEEING EDITED; SEEK ERROR
b) and then often switches to command mode

7) After editing a FTP file and closing it

VEDIT sometime crashes (not always reproducable)

8) "Connection Settings" dialog

if no connection open:
"NEW" isn't the best default button IMHO
==> better "CONNECT"

9) What is the difference between "Close" and "Cancel" in the
FTP FileOpen dialog?

10) FTP Connections done via dialog seems not to be populated to
Command mode.
Or:
Closing the FTP dialog always disconnects the FTPs?

11) Cancelling the "Overwrite existing file" dialog gives

a) SEEK ERROR
b) and opens local file

==> better do a real cancel

12) Dialoges "FTP File-Open" and "Connection Settings" are
not always opened together

There seems(!) to be no rule whether only the former, the latter
or both are displayed

13) Closing/Canceling the "FTP FileOpen dialog" disables the
mouse navigation in text

==> key press required (like after Get_Key())

Thank you for the extensive feedback.
Let us fix those issues before we consider more ftp feedback.

Also, sorry about the missing sendemail.vdm macro; I thought I checked
that carefully. I am on vacation until Dec. 28, and cannot fix that from
here.

VEDIT (32-Bit) Beta Test Ver. 6.15.1 12/21/05
Windows-Version: 501
Code Page: 850

_____________
One minor error I noted in installing is the display of ERRATA.TXT.

I had previously set tabs to be 14 14 (this is set automatically from a table viewing macro, and I must have inadvertently saved in .cfg).
It may be preferable for installation to set tabs to 8 (LOCAL).

_____________
I seem to have lost some of the icons from the toolbar (this may have been during testing of earlier 6.15 beta (exe only).
Specifically I lost the "Display long lines with word wrap" & "Toggle File selector", plus some others.

Is this expected behaviour?
It also seemed to affect the previous version (but I had to restore configuration to test.

I reset to installation default & they returned.

This raises the question - Where is this stored?
If registry will this impact CD or USB key installations?

_____________
I have been unable to get the ftp to work.
My 1st attempt (to look at my homepage) brought a XP Firewall message (which I allowed).
Now it appears to connect, but I see no files, and attempts to disconnect etc result in a caption "FTP FileOpen (Not Responding)".

Attempts to connect to ftp....

Site=ftp....
PW=FBBA397B1E50A08616C1246E3AE28704D1113F64

Both work OK in my normal ftp client

I haven't noticed it until your message, but here they are lost too.

Same here.

Sysinternal's RegMon shows that the toolbar is stored in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GreenviewData\Vedit\Ver6.1\ToolBar

This is strange as no toolbar icons changed from 6.13 to 6.15.

Yes, they are stored in the registry; this is handled by a toolbar API and it is stored in a MS proprietary format that I don't understand.

Perhaps we changed some menu ID numbers of something related.
I will check into it.

I noticed the Vedit web site states:-
"Current Version is 6.15.0 dated 01/01/06"

I thought Ted might have released the new version, without letting us know.

I downloaded the "VEDIT and Pro64 for Windows with .PDF files"

This actually contains:-
VEDIT (32-Bit) Beta Test Ver. 6.15.1 12/01/06

I was hoping for updated help files, but this hasn't happened yet.

PS the Version is still 6.13.1

I haven't notified anyone of this version since I haven't yet updated the help file. Will be working on that now.

What does that mean???

Please wait until the website says version "6.15.1"; that will indicate that the on-line help and other details are completed.
