I have been posting minor "hidden" updates to VEDIT on our website and letting new customers test them. Even though the website says the current version is 6.15.3, it is actually 6.15.4; the date will change with every little update I post. I will NOT document all these changes until later.
Mostly, I am fixing various problems related to Vista/Win7 such as the Alt-x key problem.
My next goal is to fix the "shell" problem, especially with 64-bit Windows.
After that I will finalize the new html-based on-line help files.

I just wanted to briefly explain this in case you download from the website and notice that the version is later than 6.15.3. At this time I would NOT recommend downloading as some of my Vista/Win7 fixes are breaking things under XP and I still need to correct that too.

Ted.

Thanks Ted for fixing the Alt-X key problem.
(Thanks to Fritz too, for finding it)

Maybe it would be better to have a separate Vista/7 (Beta) version. Or include both .exe files in the download.

I recently installed a new hard disk and installed Windows-XP + SP2 + SP3 on it.
Then I downloaded and installed the latest VEDIT version.
Here are some problems I found:

- Alt-Fkey combinations do not work. For example, pressing Alt-F2 (for replace) or Alt-F9 (for move block) have no effect.

- If User or Tools menu item is accessed with keyboard, extra key codes are output.
For example, I have configured F12 = [MENU]UF. Pressing F12 starts the macro and opens a dialog, as expected, but then letters UN are inserted in the textbox of the dialog.

- Double-pressing Control-key does not remove block markers (even if this option has been enabled in config).

- Help does not work. Pressing F1 or selecting "Help" -> "Contents (Topics)" has no effect on first try. On second try, it shows error dialog: "The topic does not exist...".
The problem is not in the help file, the same problem occurs if I copy the old help file from my old hard disk.

- In Config dialog, clicking on the Help button does not open context sensitive help, but instead opens Help Index.

Then I copied the old vpw.exe file from my old hard disk (V6.15.4 07/02/09).
Now most of the things work, but there is still a strange delay before help window opens (but this may be Windows problem).
Another strange thing is that whenever I open Help, ZoneAlarm indicates some network access. I wonder why would Windows Help access the net?

Dear All,

I would like to join Pauli in making this suggestion. In fact, I would like to suggest 3 more possible options as well. Specifically XP/64x, Vista/64x and 7/64x.

I think that for RUNSHELL.VDM we were just lucky that the same adaptation worked for XP/64x, 7/32x and 7/64x. Possibly and probably it also works for Vista/32 and Vista/64x as well.

Now I would like to give Pauli a belated progress report on his VEDITPDF.VDM adaptation. In the original version I had a minor issue. Specifically the {Help, Vedit Macro Manual ..} gave an error message and then opened the manual. The adapted version works like a charm.
Since I do not have Zone Alarm, I do not know whether or not this is related to Pauli's issue.

Pauli,

I just noticed that I am also using your windows setup. Specifically,

Windows-XP + SP2 + SP3

So, I thought to reproduce one of your issues.
Specifically,

Actually, I did something slightly different and ended up with, essentially, the same error message.

Here are the details:
I have uncompressed the latest vpw.exe file and embedded the version number and date. This gave me,

vpw_6.15.4_06-11-2010.exe

and I have copied this execuatable to my vedit home directory. Then launching it I verified again that the version number and date jive. After pressing Alt-H, F1
I got the error message:

"The topic does not exist... Contact vendor, 129"

The previous version,vpw_6.15.4_10-30-2009, which is slightly more recent than yours, works like a charm.

Now I have a question about your ..

Is it possible that this is a Zone Alarm issue ?

My specific question is this. Would you be willing to test it with ghostwall.exe ? I used this firewall on my previous Win XP64 computer that has crashed. The programmers were realy enthusiastic about this no frill fire wall. It also recorded potential attempts by other programs and it worked well with my Symantec firewall.

You can download it from www.ghostview.com

There is a problem with the license key on the latest Vedit version.

I recently got a new work computer, so I needed to install Vedit.
I downloaded the latest version and installed it.
But when I try to enter my license key, it is not accepted.
The message says "Sorry, but the serial-registration-number does not support this product".

I downloaded and tried both the normal version and pro64 version, and the same error was displayed with both of them.

To overcome this problem, I copied the old vpw.exe file from the Vedit I had installed on USB stick. With that, the license key is accepted.

It appears that even the "32-bit version" (vpw.exe) in the current Vedit downloads is actually 64-bit version.
Help -> About VEDIT dialog says: "VEDIT Pro (64-Bit) Trial, Ver. 6.15.4 07/27/10"

BTW, Shouldn't that be 6.15.5 ?
The file whatsnew.txt lists "CHANGES FROM 6.15.1 TO 6.15.5". My old vpw.exe is version 6.15.4.
