With this new version 6.10.2, I noticed something that never seemed to be a problem before.

The text is out of sync with the line numbers.

This is using the Vedit Oem font, size 10.

I've got some text files 3000 and 4000 lines long, and it seemed it used to be OK even at that level.

But now, it is off from even the beginning of a file.

(Am I the only one experiencing this?)

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you:
do you mean that the line number indicated in the status line differs
from the actual line number?

I have tested this with a >100.000 line file and cannot replicate it.

I have never seen this or heard of it.

Make sure that {CONFIG, File handling, Header size} is not set.
When it is set, the header is treated as line "0".

Maybe you've just been on the computer too long. ;-)

What I see looks like:

75
line of text
76
another line of text
77
yet another line of text

Where the lines of text are *in between* the line numbers, rather than the text for line 75 lining up with the 75.

I assumed that the line number on the status line did not agree with the cursor. You are referring to "Rulers". No one here ever has Rulers enabled and few customers ever have them enabled.

Therefore, I can only help you if you send me the exact steps to replicate the problem.

PLEASE, always mention all non-default configuration settings when reporting problems.

Ted.

It's a bit OT, but I find these Rulers very useful and actually I wish
you did a bit more with them ;-)
(Like the ability to select rows/columns by just dragging along the
rulers, and the possibility to have a line drawn in the text at selected
positions on the ruler like e.g. Visio or other graphics app offer it,
but such "drag-off rulers" could also be helpful when editing columnar
data...)

So don't take them away ;-)

Cheers

Michael

Michael:

Interesting suggestions. We won't take the rulers away. :-)

Perhaps bookmarks could be shown on the ruler, too?

On the other hand, I would like to have margins on the text window of Vedit. That is, a few pixels of margin on the display only, as in Visual Studio for example. (The width of the margins, in pixels, could be set from Config menu.)

The margins could be used pretty much for the same functions as suggested above for the rulers.

Another problem with the (left) ruler is that it is so wide, because room has been reserved for so many digits. That does not look nice, and it takes more space than needed. Could it be possible to make the ruler narrower if the file does not have a billion lines? Or, alternatively, a user configuration option for the ruler width.

As you well know, I always have non-default settings, and there seem to be more and more of them to choose from. .

I was wondering why something that had been working so well suddenly changed.

I have just opened a file with 119439 lines. The "rulers" are shown
correctly, no matter which font i'm using.

I tried the rulers and they are definitely not in synch with the text (see attached screen dump).

CAPTURE.DOC (95KB)

Well, that is interesting. We will try to replicate it. Please tell me which VEDIT font size you are using and your screen resolution (e.g. 1290x1024).

Vedit Ansi Regular 9 point (default out of the box)
Screen 1024*768
It also happens at 800*600

I noticed that if you change the LineSpace setting in VEDIT.INI to anything other than 0, the line numbers on the ruler go out of sync.

Well, that probably explains the problem.
I implemented the LineSpace. When Tom implemented the Ruler he must have overlooked that.

The ruler seems to take the LineSpace into account.
Only the amount of the added pixels is wrong IMHO.

Somehow mine had 1 (one), and setting it to 0 (zero) corrected the ruler alignment problem.

I had never twiddled with this before, so don't know how the wrong number got there.

Thanks to all.

Ian:

Can you please check if you have LineSpace set in your VEDIT.INI file.

I noticed that the ruler is OK in my new notebook, so I checked what was different in my old computer.

It does have LINESPACE set to 1.
(This has had new versions of Vedit installed over each other for years.)

Setting it to 0 fixed the ruler.

Good. Tom should have this fixed very soon. I hope to release VEDIT 6.10.3 next week.
