When I updated to Vedit 6.10.2, the conflict I used to have with OpenOffice.org went away, but today it seemed to return.

The the prior Vedit, if I was running OOo (as its affectionately known to its enthusiasts), then used something like Explorer (I normally use PowerDesk) to double-click on a text file to have in open in Vedit, then Vedit would stop responding, and need Task Manager to close.

With Vedit 6.10.2, text files would open OK in Vedit.

But today, after OOo had been running a long time, I had the same problem happen, where Vedit would freeze, and need to be closed by Task Manager.

Upon closing and restarting OOo, everything worked OK again.

(I'm using NT4, and realize that this is actually more of an OOo problem than Vedit, but wanted to mention it here, in case anyone else happend to have some strange interaction between the two.)

I never used OOo and also run W2k, but occasionally I have the same
problem!
Have no idea with what it might be related, but I can confirm you're not
alone :-)

Cheers

If VEDIT is slow to startup, check if you have the File Selector set to "Xplor". VEDIT then has to query for all the drives and this can take several seconds, especially with network drives. If there are network errors, it could take
a very long time until each drive query times out.

Ted.

Reed:

I am not aware of any problems. However, PowerDesk always seemed very flaky to me.

I don't use the File Selector, so there should be no drives queried when Vedit starts.

Also, the problem I had the day I posted the message, plain NT Explorer had the same problem.

It has not returned, though, so must be some sort of fluke.

It happened again just now. I had OOo Calc open with a spreadsheet, that I was copying and pasting sections of into an e-mail, then went on to look for a text file with PowerDesk, and upon clicking on the file, to launch Vedit, which froze, upon closing Vedit with Task Manager, which also said that PowerDesk was also not responding, upon Vedit's closing, PowerDesk woke up and said:

PowerDesk -> G:\misc\*.*

Cannot find the file '(null)' (or one of its components.)
Make sure the path and filename are correct, and that all required libraries are available.

In this case, Vedit launched alone worked fine.

The problem only happens when OOo has been running for a while, and PowerDesk is used to launch Vedit.

(With the previous version of Vedit, it would happen 100% of the time, immediately, but with 6.10.2, only happens now under certain circumstances.)

Another program was able to cause the same problem.

I was trying to use Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 to remote admin others that were still at v2.1.4, which I found does not work. But the attempt left many instances of the admin program running.

And Vedit did that freezing thing upon trying to start it.

So, it may be my firewall interacting with something that makes Vedit freeze.
