Can V-Edit search and replace a text string starting at "C:/some directory" ? Or is it limited to one file at a time?

This is precisely what the Wildfile macro is for. This is probably the most useful VEDIT macro and for many users the most important feature of VEDIT.
You can process files in any desired directory and optionally in all subdirectories. E.g. you could easily process all *.txt files on the entire hard disk.

I have found the Wildfile macro far too complex to use.
Therefore, I made a long time ago a simplified version of it, called "WildSearch".

WildSearch does search only. It only asks you the filenames and search string and starts processing immediatelly. After all search has been done, just press any key to return to Visual Mode.
I use WildSearch macro all the time.

If anybody is interested, I can upload the macro here (in the Macro Library conference).

Does this mean it stays in the file just searched?

Oh yes, please!

The macro searches all the files specified.
When the string is found, it stops with the string highlighted.
You can now edit the file as you wish.
When done, press VISUAL EXIT (i.e. Ctrl-E or Numpad-/ or Ctrl-F10) to continue search.
When no more occurrences are found, press any key and you will be returned to the file and position where you were when you started the search.
This is how Wildfile.vdm works, too, only the unnecessary questions have been omitted.
