Since the topic "placing links to messages" came up recently
I tried to summarize some infos about it.

(You can also see the infos when pointing on a conference or on a
message in your browser.)

Example link:

http://.../read?13652,29

The "13652" is the number of the message and "29" is the conference
number.

If you are getting messages via mailing list, you can see the
message number in the mail footer:

Example:

To reply: mailto:vedit-macros.13652@...

Together with the following (and attached due to formatting) list you
can build a link without going online to the web interface:

"vedit-macros" is number "29"
and so the link is: http://.../read?13652,29

Thanks Christian,

I tried your Example link to 13625?29 and it worked fine.

I would like to save it to my computer as read13625?29.html
but could not. I had various difficulties. I treated the first one by replacing the ? character by _. The second difficulty was that I could not find the number. In fact in my Netscape 7.0 I got a restore frames message. I know by trial and error that I have to save it as a frame and not as a page.
After restoring the frames I could still not find the number.
Am I missing something?

Thanks,

-peter.

I tried this from a computer which has never accessed WebBoard and it did not work - I got the WebBoard log-in screen. Pressing the "Guest" button entered WebBoard, but then the link was lost.

I will experiment some more.

If this is the case, then including links in the errata.txt file or on the website would be useless.

I have two programmers that are very experienced creating web-based control panels using SQL (MySQL and MSSQL). My brother Phil said he could create a reasonable
user forum in less than one week. We may do that.

Mayby Webboard can be setup up to grant a free *reading* access?

Otherwise, why not simply tell your readers that they have lo login
to webboard first before the links are active?

Or, even simplier, create the link list as the first "conference" on
Webboard and tell the readers of errata.txt and / or your homepage to
look up an overview on useful user contributions there. This
"conference" would also be the right place for links to "fan pages"
like Christian's, Pauli's and Scott Lambert's.

This does not appear to be an option.

I will consider this since they can simply press the [Guest]
button to enter WebBoard.

Yes, an "Overview" as the first category would be useful. You
are welcome to try and set it up if you can.

I thought to do a little experiment as well.

Specifically, I have a Juno account in addition to my university account. I tried the address

.../read?4219,37

and it worked fine. Note, however, that at first I have added .html and that did not work.

Incidentally, I found the previous address to be a fascinating discussion of the ideas that lead to LATEX.VCS. I have added it to my copy of LATEX.VCS.

Looking forward to hearing the reactions of other vedit users to my little experiment.

P.S. I also got an extra dividend. I am using Internet Explorer from my Juno account. I also got the message
"Restore frames". I know from Netscape that in order to save a readxxxx.html file I have to use "frames". In short, I do not know how to set up frames in explorer.

Thanks,

-peter.
